5 Ways to Attract More Customers to Your Small Business

You just started a business; products and services are readily available in a physical or online store. Then you soon realize that finding or keeping customers in this competitive market is harder than expected. Sales are always a good way to attract customers, but if you are not excited about shrinking profits, here are five ways to attract more customers to your small business:

1 – Enhance your marketing strategy

Avoid sticking to the same marketing methods over time. Instead, test out new approaches to see how they work. For example, if you always use the same banners, flyers or ads in the coupon mailer, next time, put that money towards a radio spot or sponsor an event that caters to your target market.

2 – Offer something new

Sometimes you need to spice things up a little to make customers come back. For example, you may suggest a new product line to your clients by offering samples upon purchase. If you own an Internet-based organization, you may launch an e-book that educates the reader on something valuable. Give it away for free as a promotional item if they buy something else.

3 – Build a true relationship with your customers

Word of mouth advertising is still the best route to getting the customers you want and need. Those customers are your ambassadors and will not only come back but they will bring their friends along. To achieve that, make sure you stay close to your client base. Interact with them offline by getting to know them personally, and online by creating a blog where you could promote sales, review products, and provide lifestyle advise that apply to your industry. Plus, as a small business owner, you have the flexibility to personalize each customer’s experience. For example, when I am looking for a particular product at my local beauty supply store, the owner always manages to order it for me even if it is not part of her regular supply. That way she stays attentive to customers’ needs and expectations by ensuring they don’t go to the competition.

4 – Use social media to build your business

Today, social media is an indispensable tool for businesses. You can easily create a page for your company, interact with customers who follow you, host contests and network with customers to solve problems. This is one of the most important ways to build a customer base.  You are not focusing on the hard sell here. Rather, your focus is on building a reputation so that every time people need a product you have, they think of your organization first. There are more than a billion users you could potentially reach on social networks, so use them intelligently depending on the nature of your business. For example, you can host promotional campaigns on Facebook, share your blog posts on Twitter, showcase your products on Pinterest, provide visual tutorials on Youtube or Slideshare and promote educational services like webinars and workshops through a Linkedin group.

5 – Partner with other companies

Another effective way to attract more customers is to work with other companies. This pulls in more clients to your location. When partnering with other businesses, think about how you could both create synergy through collaboration. You should thus identify companies whose services complement yours. For example, if you own a whole food store, you can partner with gyms to provide coupons or products to their clients.
